The Event

SECAFRICA – Securing Africa from Cyber Threats

24th – 25th January 2018JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Recent reports warn that Africa is fast becoming a “safe harbour for cybercrime”. Increased availability of low cost internet, a rapidly growing internet user base and weak cybercrime laws on the continent are contributing to this threat. However, the public and private sectors have begun to look at ways around a continental response to Cybercrimes. Governments across the continent are working with international organisations and regulatory bodies to develop global strategies to tackle cybercrime and bring together evidence, academic research and innovative practice from around the world.

With a skill shortage in the cyber security space, they also recognise the value of education and training, not just as a resource to fight crime, but also as a means of prevention by empowering people to stay safe online. Governments need to protect themselves and entities that exist within their respective countries. Criminal exploit the power of networking to carry out attacks, it is therefore vital to look at how networking can be used on a local and global scale to help combat cybercrime in Africa.
